Program Description:
ToursProgram Description: This Summer Study Abroad Program, sponsored by the University of West Georgia's Department of Foreign Language and Literature, includes four weeks in Tours and the surrounding Loire Valley region, known as both the Garden of France and the Cradle of the French Language. Located on the Loire River, Tours is a dynamic city steeped in history that remains an important cultural and intellectual center today.

During the program, you will stay with a host family in Tours. You will have breakfast and evening meals with your family and will have wonderful opportunities to make lasting friendships. During this time you will also be taking courses at the Institut de Touraine, a very highly respected language school for foreign students learning French. Courses at the Institut will meet five days a week for intensive language study.
In addition to offering an exceptional immersion experience and outstanding formal language instruction, this program gives students an extraordinary opportunity to discover French culture and civilization, surrounded by the ruins of Tours’s Gallo-Roman wall and just an hour by train from the hustle and bustle of modern-day Paris.

Courses:
FREN 1002, 2001, 2002, 3100, 3211, 4150: In the Institute of Touraine’s classes, students have 22.5 contact hours weekly for a total of 90 contact hours during the four-week session and do coursework appropriate to the level of French class in which they have been placed. In addition, all students must complete regular journal entries in French and other assignments as requested.

-FREN 3211: students complete a series of assignments relating to French culture and literature which they must then revise based on professor comments.

Advanced students may opt to continue their experience in France with a summer internship (FREN 4785, 3 credits) in the month following the close of the program. Contact the program director for information about this option.
